John Green

With Christmas coming up now is the time to ask your loved one for books. A great option is the John Green box set. It can be purchased off of Amazon.
The set includes Looking for AlaskaAn Abundance of KatherinesPaper Towns, and The Fault in Our Stars. Both Paper Towns, and The Fault in Our Stars have been recently made into major motion pictures.

If you have never read any of John Green’s work before this is a great way to start. He perfectly captures the nature of adolescence. Within each book you see equal parts pain and joy. Every book is a journey of discovery for the main characters. Not only for themselves, but also discovering that people are just people and it is dangerous to
raise them into something else.

Graphic novels

Graphic novels are a great source of reading pleasure. In many cases they may be better than an actual novel. Graphic novels aren’t just for kids. The many pictures and limited text is a relief for our minds after a long day of reading and writing reports. They are brief, easy to pick up and just as easy to set down. They are best in the morning with a cup of coffee.
A great graphic novel to check out is any of the collections of Calvin and Hobbs. Follow Calvin a six-year-old boy and his best friend Hobbs (his sometimes stuffed tiger) on their adventures. They spend all of their time day dreaming, getting in and out of trouble and contemplating the meaning of life.
It’s lighthearted and funny for all ages. The rambunctious youth and his trusty sidekick are a great source of entertainment. You can go on an entire adventure with the duo just by reading one comic strip.

Yellow Crocus

For everyone who read and loved The Help by Kathryn Stockett and are looking for another heartwarming thought inspiring piece of literature I highly recommend checking out Yellow Crocus by Laila Ibrahim.
This story follows the relationship and lives of Mattie a slave woman and Lisbeth the master’s daughter. Mattie is forced to give up her new son in order to be Lisbeth’s wet-nurse. Though the relationship begins with Mattie resenting the child she soon grows to love her and fear the day Lisbeth will be taken away from her.

Theirs is a relationship that challenges their way of thinking and their place in society. As they grow together they find that neither can accept the brutal ways of the south in this pre-abolition piece. Yellow Crocus is a story about love and loss and taking chances in order to find yourself. You can find it here on Amazon
